›When Things Occur‹
Juxtaposed with sağ’s installation (see References for belit sağ and ›my camera seems to recognize people‹) in the gallery space, Oraib Toukan’s single-channel video installation titled When Things Occur is based upon a series of Skype conversations between the artist and several Gaza-based photojournalists. The video dwells in the space between flat-screens monitors and their affect, exploring what lays behind the pixels which come to embody violence and destruction. It examines how documentary footage operates when representing suffering, and what “viewing suffering at a distance” could possibly mean.
